LONDON — With “a lot of heart,” Novak Djokovic survived. At 39, he is into yet another Wimbledon semifinal after beating Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime.
“This has been one of the best matches of my career on this court. These are the matches that stay in the memory,” the Serbian said in his on-court interview after defeating Aliassime in a dramatic match, 7-6 (12-10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7) and 7-6 (10-4).
It was, in fact, the first time Djokovic had to decide a match in the fifth-set super-tiebreak.
“Each of us showed our A-game in the super-tiebreak. I’m happy, but let’s keep it short because I have no energy left,” he said.
The interviewer began reciting his records, until Djokovic cut him off: “Yes, another semifinal for me. I’m going to look at all my numbers when I retire. Now, I have to recover because it is still business for me.”
Here are the numbers Djokovic is not yet interested in:
Friday’s match against Jannik Sinner will be his 55th Grand Slam semifinal.
He now has 17 Wimbledon semifinal appearances.
The match against Carlos Alcaraz in the 2023 Wimbledon final remains the only match Djokovic has lost after dropping the first set at the All England Club.
For the eighth consecutive time he will step onto Centre Court to play for a place in the final. He holds the all-time record.
