Nick Kyrgios sarcastically showed his disdain for Zizou Bergs. “Who?” the Australian commented on a post by CLAY’s Instagram account (@claymagazine_).
The sequence of events is as follows: in May, Kyrgios called Bergs’ celebration at Roland Garros 2024 “lame” after Bergs won his first ever Grand Slam match and celebrated with Belgian fans by shouting, “Where’s the party?” to which they responded, “Here is the party!”
In a recent interview published by CLAY, Bergs said that the Wimbledon 2022 finalist’s comment did not surprise him. “‘Lame’ isn’t a nice thing to say. He can criticize a lot, but when he’s criticized, he never takes it well. I’m not surprised he said this (laughs),” Bergs remarked.
“I barely know him, but I have to say I like him a lot. On the court, he’s doing things differently,” acknowledged Belgium’s number two tennis player.
Kyrgios, as Bergs probably had expected, responded to that criticism with the aforementioned dismissal.
Always active on social media and participating as a commentator in several major events since being sidelined due to injury, the Australian has continued to grow his long list of controversies, making direct references to his colleagues.
A favourite aim was Jannik Sinner. In addition to all the criticisms he sent to the world numer one after his doping case—where Sinner, for now, emerged without punishment—Kyrgios added a sexist comment. The Aussie wrote “second serve” in a Twitter post showing a photo of him with his ex-girlfriend, Russian Anna Kalinskaya, who is currently dating the Italian.
The former world number 13 plans to return to competition at the 2025 Australian Open using his protected ranking.
