PARIS – Andy Murray’s last wish in tennis. Or the first as a retired player: “I would like to see Novak Djokovic with the gold medal”.
After playing his last match as a professional and bidding farewell to the public on the Suzanne Lenglen court, the Briton revealed that his greatest historical rival is his favourite to become champion in Paris 2024.
“It clearly means a lot to him. When he plays for Serbia in Davis Cup, or the matches he played in the Olympic semifinals, you can see that side coming out from him. It would be great if he could make it,” said the two-time Olympic champion.
Murray is one of several people responsible for the fact that Djokovic has never played an Olympic final. In the colorful Wimbledon of London 2012, the Briton beat him by a double 7-5 and sent him to dispute the bronze against Juan Martin Del Potro.
In front of about thirty journalists on the stormy night in Paris, the Scot highlighted the great rivalry he had with his friend Djokovic.
“My biggest matches were mostly against Djokovic. The finals in Australia, we played finals in all the Grand Slams, we played in the Olympics…. Novak is someone I’ve known since I was 11 years old,” he recalled.

Four of the five finals he lost in Melbourne were against the Serb. He also got defeated against him in the final match at Roland Garros 2016.
Although the balance was heavily tilted to Djokovic overall (25-11) and in major tournament definitions (5-2), Murray celebrated where he needed most: in the 2013 Wimbledon final. He also won against the Serb his first Grand Slam in New York in September 2012.
