Rafael Nadal‘s great adventure in tennis seems to have no end: the Spaniard announced on Saturday that there is a “strong possibility” that the tournament starting tomorrow will be his last Roland Garros, but did not completely close the possibility of continuing to play in the 2025 season. Nadal extends the enigma.

“My last Roland Garros? There’s a good chance it will be, but I’m not going to say 100 per cent. I’ve improved physically since Rome. Physically I have less limits. And mentally I have the right motivation,” he told a news conference at the French Open venue.

Fourteen-time champion of the tournament, Nadal is due to meet German Alexander Zverev, the world number four, in the first round. A first-round defeat – unheard of in his career in that tournament – will mean a farewell to tennis with a stain unbefitting his legend.

Nadal wants to retire from tennis on his own terms, as CLAY reported on May 12th. A French Open farewell in the opening match would not fulfil that wish, although the Spaniard is confident it is possible to defeat the German, as he did in the 2022 edition in a dramatic encounter.

Nadal, who turns 38 next week, owns 22 Grand Slam titles, two fewer than Serbian Novak Djokovic’s 24.
