In the hours and days following Juan Carlos Ferrero’s abrupt dismissal, Spanish media insisted that Carlos Alcaraz had not been involved in the decision, something Toni Nadal rejects: it is impossible that Ferrero was dismissed without Alcaraz’s intervention and approval, he says.

‘I understand that nothing is done without Carlos’ approval, of course,’ said the man who shaped Rafael Nadal’s career, turning him into one of the most successful players of all time, in statements to CLAY and also RG Media.

The experienced coach admitted his surprise at Ferrero’s dismissal after seven years coaching Alcaraz, whom he led to world number one and six Grand Slam titles.

‘I’ve been told that they gave him a contract and that he had to respond within 48 hours. It’s a bit strange after a seven-year relationship to be rushed into making such decisions,’ criticised Nadal, who emphasised the peculiarities of the relationship between tennis players and their coaches, which is different from what happens in other sports.

‘The difference is very clear. Normally, coaches, due to their age, are the ones who make the decisions. In tennis, the coach accompanies the player wherever he wants to go. And it’s difficult. There comes a point where it’s hard to balance things.’

Toni Nadal believes that as Alcaraz grew up and gained success and confidence, he began to change.

‘When Juan Carlos and Alcaraz started, one was 15 years old and the other was a (former) world number one. Alcaraz had to be grateful (for being coached by him).’

Until things changed. “As the years go by and Carlos becomes a global figure, I suppose they (the Alcaraz family) want to be in control of what happens. Before, Juan Carlos could decide on and off the court, but then I guess the parents, the family, Alcaraz himself and everyone else wanted to get involved because there is a lot at stake.‘

What happened is quite obvious, Nadal tells CLAY: ’Things have to be made easy. I don’t think it’s not Alcaraz’s decision, it’s normal that Alcaraz has given his opinion, he’s the player. In his mind, above all else, tennis has to go well.‘

What does the future hold? Toni Nadal believes that, even though Ferrero has been dismissed, his influence will remain powerful.

’Juan Carlos did a very good job on the court. I think everything will remain the same; the foundations are well established.”
