Two days to read and sign the contract, two resounding ‘no’s, and now a well-deserved break: the inside story of the rift between Ferrero and the ‘Alcaraz clan’

Juan Carlos Ferrero renewed his contract with Carlos Alcaraz every year, but at the end of 2025, the signing of that contract was delayed. And everything accelerated, for the worse, until it led to the breakup.

‘What happened is very simple,’ a source close to the now former coach of the world number one told CLAY.

“The contract was annual. The 2025 contract ended at the end of November, and they waited until Saturday the 13th of this month to present a new one and until Monday the 15th at the first hour to sign it. Juan Carlos did not accept it, and they did not want to make any changes.”

In other words, the man who, over the last seven years, has led a teenager to become one of the most successful players of all time—six Grand Slam titles and world number one—had to wait two weeks to receive a contract renewal. And when that contract arrived, he had two days to read and sign it. He made an obvious counter-offer that was not accepted.

And that was the end of it. There was no room for further negotiation, or more likely, no intention to continue. Neither the ‘Alcaraz clan’ nor Ferrero himself wanted to continue under the current conditions.

The relationship between Ferrero and Alcaraz’s father had been deteriorating for some time. What will Ferrero do from now on? Is it true that he intends to coach a new player? Those close to him tell CLAY that no, now is the time to slow down.

+Clay  "Fear? People who go to war feel fear; this is just a game", says French Open champion Zeballos

‘He’s going to take a break. It could be two months or eight, and after that break, if something really interesting comes along, he’ll surely return to the circuit.’
