MELBOURNE – Luciano Darderi sent his support to his friend Cristian Garin, who lost his father, Sergio Garin, on Friday night in Chile.

“I want to wish him a lot of strength. He’s going through a very difficult moment, and he will come out of it stronger. We’ll be together throughout the year and we’ll try to support him as much as we can,” the Italian told CLAY after reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Following the win over Russia’s Karen Khachanov, the player born in Argentina thought of his friend and dedicated a message of support that wrote in the camera: Fuerza, Gago.

“It just came from the heart. I felt like doing it in that moment,” said the 23-year-old. “Cris and I train together, we share the same fitness coach (Argentina’s Berny Carberol), and I consider him a friend. I wanted to acknowledge both him and his father.” Darderi will face Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.

Sergio Garin, the father of Chile’s No. 1 player, had been dealing with medical complications over the past few months. After his run at the Australian Open, the former world No. 17 was able to spend a few days with his family before the sad news.

Sergio Garin instilled in his son a love for sport and was frequently present at tour events and Davis Cup ties when Garin represented Chile.
