MELBOURNE – Roger Federer has a clear recipe for Joao Fonseca to take the next step: patience and timing to unleash his full power.

“Joao is a little bit like me, and also similar to Jannik (Sinner), in the sense that he needs a bit more time to know when to dial back and when to unload his shots; once he’s figured that out, the sky’s the limit” the Swiss said in Melbourne, asked by CLAY at a press conference.

What makes the 19-year-old Brazilian special? “What separates him from a lot of the other guys is his power — forehand, backhand, serve — and what he’s able to bring point for point. It’s truly impressive to see” analysed the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

Federer backed Fonseca in 2023, when the Brazilian was still far from the spotlight he now commands. At just 17, the sportswear company On Running — owned by the former world No. 1 — became his sponsor. At the time, Fonseca was a very good junior player but had yet to win a Grand Slam. Later that year, he lifted the US Open junior title and finished as the best in the world.

“I truly think he’s one of the guys who can compete for the biggest wins”, Federer said.

Beyond his tennis, Federer’s support of Fonseca is also rooted in the Brazilian’s personality.

“Joao is exciting. He’s got good aura. He’s a very likeable character,” he added.

Could Federer coach Fonseca in the future?

“Never say never! Although I’m very busy — I have four children — so for now there’s no chance. But (Stefan) Edberg used to say the same,” he said, referring to the Swedish legend who coached him between 2014 and 2015.
