PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic – In Coleman Wong’s own words, “things got spicy” at the end of his match against Damir Dzumhur.

“I’ve watched many of his matches and I knew what was coming. Many people know how he is, and also how tough he can be,” said the 21-year-old after defeating the Bosnian 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16 at the Copa Cap Cana.

After being broken in the fifth game of the third set following a double fault, the Bosnian did not take kindly to his opponent’s joyful reaction. When the Hong Kong player sat down in his chair, Dzumhur confronted him.

“On a double fault? Funny, huh? Look at my face and laugh… look at my face and laugh!” Dzumhur said, standing in front of Wong in a defiant manner. The chair umpire tried to calm the 33-year-old. Wong did not react: he kept his gaze fixed across the court while hydrating.

“I also consider myself very emotional, but I need to learn. This is how the best players do it. I look at Alcaraz and Sinner… they stay calm in the most important moments. That’s why they’re so good. When you stay calm, you make the best decisions,” Wong reflected in his post-match press conference.

“Whether you win or lose, you still know what you need to improve if you analyse things calmly. I’m still learning and I know I have a long way to go. I’ve only been on tour for a few years, I’m growing, but I know I need to improve and keep a positive mindset,” added the current world No. 123.
