NEW YORK – Carlos Alcaraz dominated Italy’s Jannik Sinner with his electric tennis on Sunday, watched by Donald Trump at the stadium, to win the US Open and regain the world number one spot.

The Spaniard was far superior to Sinner in the US Open final, which started late due to strict security measures because of the presence of the US president.

On a rainy afternoon on Saturday, 7 September, the new world number one as of Monday won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-4.

“I’m seeing you more than my family. Is great to see you working hard, improving, and for having a great performance during the whole tournament”, said Alcaraz to a smiling Sinner.

“My mom and my little brother are watching from home. I’m so happy for their support”

“I feel the energy, the love here in New York. I play better because of you guys”.

Alcaraz only struggled in the second set, when the Wimbledon champion noticeably raised his level and nullified his game.

Throughout the rest of the match, the Spaniard’s tennis flowed at his own pace, he stepped up at the important moments and constantly hurt Sinner with his deep shots.

With his new crown in New York, Alcaraz tied Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg on the list of top Grand Slam champions.

Thus, the Italian and the Spaniard shared the major tournaments of 2025: Sinner took Australia and Wimbledon, while Alcaraz won Roland Garros and the US Open, confirming this season as the most dominant year for the duo.

The rivalry, meanwhile, remains tilted in Alcaraz’s favour, with a 10-5 record.
